learn about our history
The Indo-American Society of Nuclear Medicine (IASNM) was conceived in 1979 and incorporated as a non-profit tax-exempt organization in the State of Texas in 1984. The membership of the Society primarily consists of physicians, scientists and technologists in nuclear medicine, although interested professionals in other disciplines also can be members of the Society.
The major objective of this Society is to advance the profession of nuclear medicine through an exchange of ideas and knowledge among its members, and also to help promote state-of-the-art nuclear medicine in developing countries, namely, India.
Since its inception, many of you have contributed significantly to the growth of this Society. Each year we meet at a dinner during the SNM annual meeting to overview the progress we made thus far and discuss new issues. Also each year, with the help of various corporate sponsorships, several prominent American colleagues with expertise in specific specialties of nuclear medicine are invited to give lectures at the annual meeting of the Indian Society of Nuclear Medicine and other Radiological and Imaging Societies in India. Each year awards are given to at least 2 young Nuclear Medicine professionals in India for their contribution to nuclear medicine. Interaction with our colleagues in India is growing, with the participation of IASNM members with leaders in nuclear medicine in the premiére meetings in India.
The IASNM is an open forum for all of us to discuss issues that concern us professionally in nuclear medicine. What the IASNM is doing now may not be sufficient to fulfill the goals of the Society, and many of you may have concrete suggestions and ideas to improve upon the present status. Our interaction with the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) has significantly grown in recent times. A proud moment for all of us was the election of Dr. Mathew Thakur as SNM President. Dr. Thakur’s personal interest has been instrumental in the positive developments that have taken place in IASNM, building on the strong foundations provided by the past and present office bearers of IASNM. This interaction will benefit the IASNM enormously and contribute towards our professional benefit.
At present, many individuals of Indian origin are members of the SNM and various Chapters and Councils, but not members of the IASNM. Many of you have not yet joined for one reason or other, but your participation is extremely essential for the growth of the IASNM. We urge you to become a member of the IASNM and earn the sense of belonging to a society that seeks to increase interaction between Nuclear Medicine professionals in India and North America and foster your professional growth; in turn, you could help the Society grow.
